Food Security & Livelihoods
In Upper Nile South Sudan, household capacity to produce or purchase food or cope with new shocks is extremely low, driven by the compounding, long-term impacts of conflict and insecurity, successive years of widespread floods, and macroeconomic challenges. In response to this complex issue, UNYDA has undertaken a comprehensive food security and livelihoods program in the region, with a focused aim to enhance the well-being of vulnerable households, especially those with children and youth.
The multifaceted program incorporates various interventions, including training on sustainable agriculture practices, the promotion of modern farming technologies, seed distribution, goats restocking, and support for fisheries.
UNYDA is actively engaged in improving income-generating activities for families grappling with poverty. This involves offering training in entrepreneurship, financial management, and market analysis, along with supporting the establishment of small businesses through conditional cash grants.
Furthermore, we support governance structures (resilience committees) to ensure local ownership, participation, and decision-making, enhancing accountability and effectiveness while leveraging community strengths and resources. By involving communities in planning and implementation, these committees foster empowerment, cohesion, and sustainable resilience, aligning interventions with local needs and realities.
